Quotations about the String Quartet

Much has been written about the string quartet and its instruments. Here are some quotations:-

"  The gentlemen in private meeting . . . played three, four and five parts with viols . . . and they esteemed a violin to be an instrument only belonging to a common fiddler, and could not endure that it should come among them for fear of making their meetings to be vain and fiddling. Anthony Wood (1632—95) Antiquities, 1674 "
